A number of settlements are expected to be established within a short time in the Raffah salient in the Gaza Strip area in accordance with a government decision. Defense Minister Shimon Peres, who yesterday visited the Sinai region, hinted that the government has resolved to strengthen the Raffah region by adding settlements, a decision which will be implemented within the shortest time.
According to Gen. Rehavam Zeevi (Ret.), in an article published in “Haaretz” on the Sebastia settlement affair, the decision concerning the settlements in the Raffah area was adopted prior to the Sebastia incident last weekend. He expressed hope that the controversy over Sebastia will not harm plans for settling the Raffah region.
As to the southern Sinai, Trade and Industry Minister Haim Barlev said yesterday while touring the Sharm el-Sheikh region, that Israel considered Merhav Shlomo, the southwest Sinai region, as one of the regions essential to her security, and the development of Sharm el-Sheikh enjoyed a high priority in the government’s planning in various fields.
