Several Bulgarian Jews have been given special awards for their work in the cultural fields. Zako Heskia was given the Golden Rose Award at the Varna film festival for his film “Dawn,” and was also named “An Artist of the People.” Rachel Israel Bali, the secretary of the Sofia Jewish Cultural Organization was awarded “The Order of September Nine.” Oved Leon Tagger, who was Deputy Minister for Energy was named “Hero of Socialist Work.”
