Georg Bernhard, editor-in-chief of the “Vossiche Zeitung” and prominent German Jewish democratic leader, and Ludwig Haas, also a democrat, were elected to the Reichstag in the national elections which took place Sunday. A number of Jewish deputies were also elected on the tickets of the socialist and communist parties.
Although no final returns are available, the general impression is that the anti-Semitic Deutschnationale party lost about one-third of the number of representatives it had in the previous Reichstag. As a result of the election it is very likely that the Deutschnationale party will leave the Government and that its place will be taken by the Social Democratic party.
The Hitlerites re-elected twelve deputies, losing two. Several days before the election date, the Deutschnationale party, under attack of the opposing groups, intensified its anti-Semitic campaign. No severe outbreaks of an anti-Semitic character were recorded.
