Several Jewish organizations sent letters to U.S. House of Representatives members urging them to vote for a bill that will decrease dependence on foreign energy sources. The letters, mailed last Friday, ask the representatives to vote for a comprehensive energy package as well as an amendment to implement a 20 percent renewable electricity standard by 2020. They cited “bal taschit,” the prohibiting of wasteful destruction, and a modern-day commitment to energy security as reasons for the Jewish community’s support of the legislation. The signers included the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, American Jewish Committee, American Jewish Congress, B’nai B’rith International, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, Hadassah, the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation, Jewish War Veterans of the USA, Men of Reform Judaism, the Rabbinical Assembly, the Union for Reform Judaism, Women’s League of Conservative Judaism and Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring.
