Several U.S. Jewish groups said they hoped Yasser Arafat’s death would be a chance to turn away from terrorism and toward peace. In a statement from its top officials, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations said Arafat’s death “opens the opportunity for the emergence of a new leadership in the Palestinian Authority that could put an end to terrorism and renew the prospect of peaceful coexistence with the State of Israel.”
