Jerusalem police were preparing tonight for possible demonstrations by ultra-Orthodox elements against the Eros “sex boutique” which was shut down by the Municipality two weeks ago but reopened today in a somewhat different guise.
The shop, which accepted mall orders for erotic photographs and “sexual aids” was closed down because it lacked a license, a move that apparently satisfied the Orthodox who had been picketing and praying in front of the establishment because it “profaned” the Holy City. The shop opened its doors again but only as a place where customers might peruse catalogues of erotica. As no money was exchanged, its owners claimed it is no longer a shop and does not require a license.
The Municipality took no action. A police spokesman told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that he was prepared to take Amram Blau, leader of the ultra-Orthodox Neturei Karta sect, into the shop to convince him that it has been “cleaned up.” The parent Eros shop in Tel Aviv was fire-bombed three weeks ago. Two yeshiva students are being held without bail in connection with the bombing.
