Shabuoth, one of the major holidays in the Jewish religious and national calendar, is being celebrated for two days beginning today. The holiday began officially tonight. The literal meaning of the word Shabuoth is “seven weeks,” representing the interval from the second day of Passover.
It is bound up with the freeing of the Jews from their Egyptian bondage and the life of ancient Jewish Palestine as an agricultural nation. The day also marks the anniversary of the granting of the law to the Jewish people. On that day Moses descended from Mount Sinai, carrying the Tablets.
The day has been compared to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, for it marked the beginning of national and religious existence for the Jewish people.
On that day the Book of Ruth, the pastoral idyl in prose, is read in the synagogue, recalling to the worshipers that they were once an agricultural people.
