Shalom Shtarkes, who was sentenced last January to a three-year prison term for his role in the kidnaping of his nephew, Yossele Schumacher, was released from Ramleh prison today after President Zalman Shazar commuted his sentence as one of his first official acts after his inauguration last week.
Shtarkes was extradited from England last year after the Schumacher boy was found after a two-year search–by United States secret service operatives in the home of a Brooklyn rabbi. Today, Shtarkes said that he will shortly leave for England to join his wife and infant son. The baby was born while Shtarkes was in a London jail last year. He said he might return later to settle in Israel.
