Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir escaped unscathed from a traffic accident this morning. He returned to his normal work schedule, including another meeting with West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, after an X-ray examination at the Sheba Hospital at Tel Hashomer.
The incident occurred as Shamir was leaving Ben Gurion International Airport for Jerusalem after welcoming President Chaim Herzog on his return from an official visit to Zaire and Liberia.
A policeman was holding back traffic entering the freeway to Jerusalem at the airport intersection, to allow Shamir’s car to speed through. But an unmarked police car disregarded the line of waiting cars, by-passed them on the side of the road and entered the freeway, crashing into the Premier’s limousine. Both cars were slightly damaged.
