The 106 Shanghai refugees who arrived here this week from the United States after being held at Ellis Island for several weeks were greeted today by the Mayor of Bremen. “You are welcomed here by someone who knows that you deserve special moral assistance,” Mayor Wilhelm Kaisen told the German-born DP’s.
The refugees, most of them Jews, will be transferred to a DP camp at Lechfeld, Bavaria. About 50 of them expect to return as immigrants to the United States, while 30 expressed a desire to emigrate to Israel. The remainder intend to take up permanent residence in Germany and Austria.
