Moshe Sharett, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, stressed here tonight the “grave disparity” between the current high immigration into Israel and American Jewry’s voluntary financial response through the United Jewish Appeal.
Mr. Sharett spoke at a dinner honoring the 120-member UJA Study Mission currently visiting Israel. The Jewish Agency, he said, has had to resort to “hand to mouth” financing, due to the lack of sufficient voluntary funds. Praising the overall role of American Jewry, he indicated his belief, however, that “there are still too many American Jews who are not participating in the UJA.” For the last three years, he declared, immigration into Israel has been at a high level but “the pace of absorption has lagged, due to insufficient funds.”
Last night, the members of the Mission were received by Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, at her home. They were also given a reception by the Jewish National Fund.
