Israeli appeals for increased emigration of American Jews to this country should be based on positive aspects, rather than on negative criticism of American Jewish life, Moshe Sharett declared here today. The former Prime Minister and ex-Foreign Minister made that statement in an address to a meeting of the Mapai Party, reporting on his recent trip to the United States.
Rebukes and condemnations against American Jews, he said, will not help produce greater American-Jewish immigration into Israel If such an increase is desired, stated Mr. Sharett, then stress should be laid on the positive aspects of the possibilities of a richer and fuller Jewish life in Israel. American-Jewish life, he said, has not been shaken by an occasional act of the dynamiting of a synagogue here or there.
Mr. Sharett said he found the economic standards among American Jews generally high, and “American comforts stronger than any ideology. “Only a long educational process, he held, would bring about an increase in American Jewish emigration to Israel, where proper living and housing conditions would have to be prepared.
