The New York Times reported from Beirut today that the Lebanese have not succeeded in their efforts to extract a promise from Soviet Foreign Minister Dmitri Shepilov, who is currently visiting Lebanon, that the Soviet Union will support the Arab states against Israel.
“Yesterday he refused to commit the Soviet Union to the support of the Arab states against Israel,” the Times report said. “Today the talks were resumed but Mr. Shepilov stuck to the Soviet line that Moscow wanted to be a friend of the Arab states but was not prepared to take sides in a controversy.”
