Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok of Israel has formally requested British recognition of the new Jewish state, a Foreign Office spokesman declared today. The government is studying the request, the spokesman added.
Britain will not depart from its treaty obligations to Transjordan, the spokesman declared, unless the United Nation finds Transjordan guilty of aggression or ? violating the U.N. Charter. The British Government will in the meanwhile continue to supply officers to Transjordan to help train its Arab Legion, and will ## continue to sell arms and provide its regular subsidy to the Amman government.
According to the latest information, the spokesman stated, one Arab Legion ?pany has failed to leave Palestine on schedule–last Saturday when the Mandate terminated–because it was engaged in a battle with the Kfar Etzion settlers. Forty British officers are serving at present with the Legion, he declared.
