The vessel Providence carrying 409 Jewish refugees from Marseilles to Haifa for legal admission to Palestine was not chartered by the HIAS as previously reported by the organization, it was learned here today. The ?vessel was chartered by the Jewish Agency with the cost paid by the Joint Distribution Committee.
In issuing a correction today, the HIAS said that its headquarters in Europe “prepared the emigrants for the voyage to Haifa and provided the migrants with ?inland trensportation to Marseilles” It also cooperated with the Jewish Agency by providing an escort for the group to the port of embarkation, the corrected statement said.
