From orthodox meat slaughterer (shochet) to horse driver, is the step made by the well-known shochet of Dobrush, Nachman Hirshorn. “Not desiring to be considered as being part of the Kleikoddish (rabbis, teachers, mohels and slaughterers) I hereby announce that instead of being a shochet I become from now on a horse driver,” says Hirshorn’s written notice to the local Soviet.

Reports of rabbis and shochtim quitting religious work increase daily, especially from White Russia. Rabbis Cjaim Muzhes of Homelm, Shimen Bolotin of Borodianke, and Moishe Yuditsky of Vietke, declared today that they are quitting the rabbinate.
