An extraordinary recognition of Rosh Hashanah marked an inter-faith ceremony, probably unique in the history of American religious life, when the Shofar was blown on Sunday, the second day of the Jewish New Year, from the steps of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. Rabbis and Christian clergymen joined in the unusual service.
In accordance with the Hebrew tradition, the Shofar was blown by Israel Feather of Temple Mishkan Tefila, New England’s largest Conservative synagogue, at the opening of the service. Students from Harvard University lined both sides of the church portico and accompanied with trombones and clarinets the singing throng of 1,000, many in uniforms of the armed forces, gathered on the Lafayette Mall of Boston Common and on the street and steps before the church.
