Premier Golda Meir’s black handbag which she carried on her meeting with President Nixon at the White House last March 1, will be auctioned by radio tonight for the benefit of the Israel Cancer Society. The handbag is known to Israelis as “Golda’s Shopping Bag.” a humorous reference to the fact that when she meets world statesmen she rarely returns empty-handed. The bag is expected to net at least IL 20,000 ($5000) for the Cancer Society. Other items in the auction include sewing machines, stereo units and tv sets.
Reliable sources in Jerusalem say the Russians warned the Syrians that Israel might react to any direct or indirect Syrian activity in the Lebanese crisis. The USSR tried to convince the Syrians to restrain themselves and to refrain from interference in the battle between the Lebanese Army and the terrorist organizations, the sources said.
Police dispersed about 30 people trying to demonstrate tonight against the murder of Iraqi Jews outside the Iraqi Embassy in Paris. Several of the demonstrators were detained but released shortly afterwards. Police said the demonstration was illegal. The groups, mostly Jewish youths, had planned to recite the “Yizkor” (prayer for the dead) for Jews reported murdered in Baghdad. They subsequently recited the prayer at a nearby synagogue.
