Shotwell of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace asserted today, receiving an honorary degree at Johns Hopkins University. Warning that the danger of the demagogue who “stirs resentments into hostilities” was greater now than ever before, Dr. Shotwell assailed Father Coughlin’s “un-Christian animus…against millions of his fellow citizens to whom the United States had become the harbor of refuge from persecution in other lands.”
