“It is not the policy of the city to mix politics with religious problems but in this case a hand must and will be taken,” declared Arthur Simon, special Health Department investigator, last night in the first of a series of four addresses over Station WNYC on the kashruth problem.
In a fifteen minute talk Simon outlined the recent history of the kashruth problem in the city. He described the laxity of kashruth enforcement under former administrations, and the interest which Aldermanic President Bernard S. Deutsch has taken in the problem, resulting in conferences of food-handlers and rabbis in an attempt to reach a solution.
“American Jewry pays $25,000 a year more for kosher food than it would spend for ordinary food. Simon asserted, “and Deutsch is determined to see an orderly supervision of kashruth in this city. Peace and harmony will prevail, and eventually kashruth will be administered to the satisfaction of all.”
