British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home told Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko of widespread British concern about the treatment of Soviet Jews at a meeting at the Soviet Embassy, a spokesman for the British delegation to the European Security Conference said. Gromyko listened carefully to Sir Alec’s remarks but did not respond positively on the Soviet-Jewish subject or on the main theme of their meeting, Anglo-Soviet cooperation.
The British National Union of Journalists along with other non-Jewish and Jewish groups drew the Foreign Secretary’s attention to the position of Soviet Jews before his departure for Helsinki. Greville Janner MP, Honorary Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Committee for the Release of Soviet Jewry, had requested that the Union of Journalists try to assist a Jewish radio Journalist in Kharkov, Yuri Miloslavsky, who was dismissed from his post when he applied for an exit visa to go to Israel, and is now threatened with a year imprisonment as “a willful malingerer.”
