THE BRITISH COLONIAL OFFICE ANNOUNCED TODAY APPOINTMENT OF SIR HAROLD ALFRED MACMICHAEL, GOVERNOR AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE TANGANYIKA TERRITORY IN AFRICA, AS HIGH COMMISSIONER AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF PALESTINE AND TRANSJORDAN.
SIR HAROLD, WHO IS 55 YEARS OLD, SUCCEEDS GENERAL SIR ARTHUR GRENFELL WAUCHOPE, WHO, THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT SAYS, WILL RELINQUISH HIS APPOINTMENT AT THE END OF FEBRUARY. MACMICHAEL IS THE FIFTH HIGH COMMISSIONER TO BE SENT TO PALESTINE BY THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT SINCE 1920.
SIR HAROLD WAS BORN OCT. 15, 1882, THE SON OF THE LATE REV. G. MACMICHAEL AND MRS. MACMICHAEL. HE WAS EDUCATED AT KING’S LYNN AND BEDFORD SCHOOLS, AND MAGDALENE COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE, WHERE HE WON FIRST CLASS HONORS IN THE CLASSICS IN 1904.
HE BEGAN HIS CAREER BY JOINING THE SUDAN POLITICAL SERVICE IN 1905, AND SERVED SUCCESSIVELY AS INSPECTOR IN THE PROVINCES OF KORDOFAN, BLUE NILE AND KHARTOUM. HE WAS POLITICAL AND INTELLIGENCE OFFICER WITH THE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE WHICH OCCUPIED DARFUR IN 1916 AND WAS CITED IN DISPATCHES THREE TIMES. HE THEN SERVED AS SUB-GOVERNOR OF DARFUR PROVINCE, ASSISTANT CIVIL SECRETARY, AND, FROM 1926 TO 1934, CIVIL SECRETARY.
SIR HAROLD IS MARRIED AND HAS TWO DAUGHTERS. HE IS A MEMBER OF THE CONSERVATIVE CLUB.
