Sir Herbert Samuel, former high commissioner of Palestine, will be the next choice of the English Liberal party as its leader in the House of Commons. This is the opinion of Lord Edward Doverdale, former M. P. and prominent Liberal leader, organizer of the Liberal Party, in an article which he published yesterday in the London “Daily News.” Pointing out that of the three suggested leaders, the Marquis of Reading, Earl Beauchamp and Sir Herbert Samuel, two are lords and according to party traditions it is not customary that the leaders in both houses should be lords. The only candidate for the House of Commons remains Sir Herbert Samuel, he writes.
“Sir Herbert is one of the ablest administrators and parliamentarians of our time,” Lord Doverdale writes. “He has justified this description by finding the only solution of our disastrous coal dispute. He is also the author of the policy of industrial social reformation which was drafted twelve years ago and is still waiting to be put into operation,” he writes. Lord Doverdale expresses his conviction that under the leadership of Sir Herbert Samuel, all sections of the Liberal party will work with enthusiasm and unanimity.
