Sir Hersch Lauterpacht, one of the 15 judges of the International Court of Justice at The Hague and a leading authority on international law, died here yesterday of a heart attack at the age of 62.
Born in the Ukraine, Sir Hersch studied at various European universities before accepting appointments in international law at the London School of Economics and subsequently at the University of London. In 1948, he was named an advisor to the United Nations Secretariat on the codification of international law.
Sir Hersch served on the British War Crimes Executive, the British prosecution group at the Nuremberg trials in 1945-46. He was appointed a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1954. Among his writings were: “The Function of Law in the International Community,” and “International Law and Human Rights.” He was editor of the British Yearbook of International Law from 1944 to 1955.
