The State Department announced that Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Joseph J. Sisco, met for more than four hours with Soviet officials in Moscow today on issues relating to a settlement of the Middle East dispute. Meeting with Mr. Sisco were Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir M. Vinogradov, G.J. Kornienko. chief of the Soviet Foreign Ministry’s American section, and I.N. Yakushin. chief of the Ministry’s Near East section. The U.S. diplomat met yesterday with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei A. Gromyko on the Middle East situation.
Mr. Sisco’s trip to the Soviet capital has been described here as a “brief round” in the U.S.-Soviet dialogue on the Middle East. The State Department said today that Mr. Sisco was seeking a common ground with the Russians for a settlement of the Arab-Israeli dispute. Some observers regarded Mr. Gromyko’s two-and-a-half hour meeting with Mr. Sisco as further evidence that the Soviet Government is interested in better relations with the U.S. as stated by the Foreign Minister in a speech to the Supreme Soviet last week. While the Sisco-Gromyko talks were underway, Soviet Communist Party chief Leonid I. Brezhnev met in Moscow with Aly Sabry, a member of the Supreme Executive Committee of the ruling Arab Socialist Union, Egypt’s only legal political party.
