The situation of the Jewish colonies in the Cherson district is improving, according to an official report issued by the Comzet, the governmental department for settling Jews on the land.
“Resowing is satisfactory and.. even good,” the report states. “Bread and forage provisions have been made until the new crop will be harvested. Good results are expected from the new crop and the colonists are now in a better mood. If the weather is good, we shall get out of the difficulties easily.”
The Jewish colonies in the Crimea are suffering from lack of water during the past weeks. A report from Evpatoria states that the colonists in the 60th, 62d and 63rd districts travel to the neighboring villages to purchase water. Some colonies go without water for three and four days. The cattle is suffering from the drought.
A complaint was submitted to the central government by the Jewish artisans in Kohaisk, White Russia, that their gardens have been confiscated.
“We cannot understand why we are not permitted to have our gardens to feed our families,” the complaint reads. “Our economic situation is bad, we cannot buy the products which we get from our gardens. The confiscation will affect our existence.”
