Six Jews received the order of “Red Banner of Labor” in recognition of their services to the building of the Dnieprostroy dam, the largest hydro-electric plant in the world.
The Jews honored are the engineers Rubin, Kaufman, Silberstein, Frumkin, and Kazman and the secretary of the Party organization, Leiserson.
More than 12 percent of the workers skilled and unskilled, employed in the dam’s construction, are Jews, according to assistant Chief Engineer Laubman.
“The work at Dnieprostroy was a great school for the greatest part of the Jewish workers employed there.” More than 80 percent of the Jewish workers, he said, joined the shock brigades. Many started as unskilled laborers and now are among the best mechanics.
