Sixty-six Soviet Jews–56 from Kishinev and 10 from Minsk–have cabled Chanuka greetings to President Zalman Shazar. The Kishinev cable offered Shazar and Israel “good wishes of prosperity” and declared: “The torch of freedom lit by the Maccabees continues burning today, warming our hearts and filling us with confidence in the reunification, and happiness of our people.” The Minsk message read, in part: “In our hearts we are together with the people of Israel. Let the land of the Maccabees flourish.”
