“Women’s Amateur Night,” a monster track show, produced and staged by the national council of the A. A. U., will take place on the boards of the second naval battalion tomorrow night. But, like many other things that happen in Brooklyn, the thing appears a bit lopsided to us.

Looking over the stellar lists of the women entries, among whom is our own Syd Koff, we find the names of two Jewish men entered also. Really, we’re not surprised at Marvin Stern’s name appearing on the program but there are the names of Milton Sandler, Joe McCluskey, and a couple of other Irishmen set down along with the women also.

However, thinking that the printer may have been practicing for the Penn Relays, we called the A. A. U. We learned that a special two-thirds of a mile run for men will be held in connection with this American indoor track and field championships for women.

STERN TO BE USED AS A PACEMAKER

Milton Sandler, national 600 meter champion and record holder, will try to erase the world’s record of 2m.43 and 3-5s now on the record books to the credit of James J. Connolly. This mark was made in New York on January 31,1923, Should Sandler win this race and lower the old time record, it will mark the first time that a Jewish runner has held this new title in amateur competition.

Sandler has as his chief opponent his good friend Marvin Stern. Marvin is a fast man at the start, breaks smoothly and quickly and will be used as a pacemaker to show the way for Sandler for the first half mile, It will be here, we believe, that Sandler’s great stamina will show itself, and he will overtake Stern.

Stern is a crack miler who formerly held the P. S. A. L. mile championship and who at present is the Military Mile Champion.

FAILS TO RUN DEAD HEAT

These two boys recently ran in a contest at an indoor carnival for the benefit of the C. W. A. workers. Both youngsters had agreed to finish the contest in a dead heat. For six laps, Stern trailed Sandler by about ten yards. Near the finish, Sandler gave the signal for Marvin to draw up to his side and at the same time put on a burst of speed. Marvin did likewise but so great was his energetic spurt that he crossed the finish line a hair-breadth in front of the 600 meter champion.

It looked to us as if it was the closest finish that we have seen on track boards in the last few years, Notwithstanding their pre-contest agreement as to a dead eat, the Judges gave the nod to Marvin Stern.

ADVICE TO FRESHMAN

Marvin, incidentally, discovered a unique way in which to work his way through college. He joined up with the National Guard outfit at so much per month. But he escaped the rigors of military drill and training by running for the state militia under its colors. The money he receives as pay for “drilling” carries him through City College, where he is captain of the track and field teams.

IRISH POISON

Jimmy McLarnin, present welterweight champion of the world, is a likeable chap without any race prejudices outside of the ring. However, once within the ropes, {SPAN}##{/SPAN}, creed, or color mean nothing him and he lambasts all comers.

Particularly is he gaining a reputation for himself in the resigned arena as the most ardent anti-semite. McLarnin blows have proved fatal to several of the better known Jewish lightweights who have tried to crash his domain. He has blasted Sid Terris, Al Singer, Ruby Goldstein and even the great Benny Leonard out of the welterweight ranks.

Though he has proved to be poison to numerous others, Barney Ross is not afraid of him. Barney has singed to meet Jimmy either in late in May or in early June. Ross has nothing to lose and everything to gain, His bout with Tony Canzoneri, for which the latter has put up a $35,000 guarantee will in all probabilities be postponed until July or even until September.

The National Boxing Commission has stated, that even though Barney may have signed with Tony for a third fight, he must fight Frankie Klick, lightweight challenger from the Pacific coast within ninety days.

A COLUMNIST’S MAIL BOX

We received a letter yesterday anent our column “Women in Sports.” We offer the part that is printable:

Dear Mr. Editor,

You mentioned track stars and fencing champion in Wednesday’s column but you failed to say a word about some of the best female sprinters in the sporting world today. Why, do you realize that the Misses Kentucky, Patterson, Essie Wessie, Cactus Rose, Hindu Queen and Mata Hari are the favorite fillies to win the Kentucky Derby next month?

Inasmuch as you limit your column to the Jewish angle, why don’t you put in a picture of Yoshe Kalb? Kalbie is one of the best lil’ horsies that has been seen on the Miami track for some time.

WRESTLING WRANGLES

Coney Island used to be the greatest, boxing and wrestling center in the world when Sullivan and Gentleman Jim were kings, For the last few seasons, Coney Island has been trying to regain even a bit of its former prestige in the sporting world. The Fugazy Bowl, Fewster Field, the Velodrome, and now Stauch’s arena have been attempting to induce the fans of Brooklyn into coming down to the Island by offering them attractive cards.

Tonight Abe Coleman. Hebrew wrestling champion, will take on Marshall Blackstock, formerly of the University of Georgia in the feature mat attraction to a finish at Stauch’s Arena.

Eli Fischer, who bounced out of Rutgers into the wrestling ring, meets the grappler whom Coleman wrestled Wednesday night at the Ridgewood Grove Arena. Fischer will do the heave and grunt act with Gino Garibaldi, one of the many Italian champions.

Eli Fischer is exceptionally proud of his cauliflowered ear. At parties where others may sing and dance, Eli just walks around sporting his much maligned ear and invariably bring the house down.

A newcomer to the wrestling ranks, Murray Brassin of Bensonhurst will meet Mario Giglio, an-other Italian. Giglio will appear with a colored pair of tights on which the favorite colors of II Duce will be woven. According to press reports Murray will sport the national colors of Bensonhurst –a herring between two potatoes on a field of “smttenna” blue.

BASEBALL PASSES

Two rookies who appeared as the brightest big league prospects in recent years have been passed on to the minor league ball clubs, Phil Weintraub has been parked at Nasnville for the summer months. Izzy Goldstein, erstwhile Detroit Tiger recruit, has been released to the international league.
