Derogatory utterances about India attributed to Reichsfuehrer Hitler have spurred a movement for a boycott of the Olympic games scheduled to be held in Berlin next August and for a boycott of German goods.
Nationalist newspapers have printed sharp attacks on Hitler, and K. F. Nariman, mayor of Bombay, condemned him in a newspaper article and expressed sympathy for the German Jews. Several importers have been reported cancelling shipments of German goods.
A meeting of the National Students League adopted by a large majority a resolution calling for a boycott of the games in protest against Hitler’s attitude towards India.
The Bombay Chronicle declared in an editorial:
“The boycott of the Olympic Games, which are being held under the auspices of Germany this year, will no doubt serve as an eloquent and dignified expression of the resentment caused in India.”
The sports editor of the Chronicle asserted:
“It is imperative that the Indian Olympic Association should convene a meeting of their council as early as possible and discuss the situation arising out of the insulting speech of the German dictator.”
