Small groups of Rumanian Jews continue to arrive in Austria despite efforts by the Hungarian authorities to check the movement of refugees through their country, the Austrian Interior Ministry revealed today.
The number of Jewish refugees now in Vienna has risen to nearly 3,000, but still they are not permitted to proceed to the American zone. In the DP centers in the U.S. zone there is mounting concern among the 30,000 Jews over the probability of their spending a third winter in the camps.
The Jews are not complaining about camp conditions or the food situation, but the long wait for permission to enter Palestine is beginning to wear them down. Only small groups of young people have left the camps and made their way to Italy where they hope to find passage to Palestine. The majority of the inmates with family ties must remain in the camps and hope for immigration visas to the U.S. or other countries.
Jewish quarters in Salzburg are concerned at the increasingly hostile attitude of the local population. The Austrians charge that the Jews are occupying most of the available space in hotels, thus interfering with the lucrative summer tourist trade.
