Premier Jan Christian Smuts today described Dr. Chaim Weizmann as “one of the outstanding men of our age” in a message issued on the occasion of the Zionist leader’s 70th birthday. “His character, integrity and devotion to the cause to which he has dedicated his life mark him as one of the most exceptional leaders that the Jewish people have ever produced,” Smuts continued.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the Zionist movement might have met with much less success, were it not for Dr. Weizmann, and added that “if the Zionist cause does not reach full fruition, it will not be the fault of Dr. Weizmann. Jewish leaders before him have failed to enter the Promised Land.”
