Declaring that “a Jewish state is emerging in Palestine, and I give it my blessing,” Prime Minister Jan Smuts said today that “my innermost sympathy is with it, I wish it every success.”
Addressing a meeting here on world affairs, Smuts deplored the present situation in Palestine, asserting that Britain tried “for 28 years to deal with it, but failed. This failure touched British honor very deeply. No wonder the British are ##ting sick and tired of it and want to clear out.” Smuts stated that not only the #### failed in Palestine, but “America also failed. Perhaps our mistake is that a #### on Palestine as a small problem,” he said.
