South African Transport Minister Paul Sauer will represent the government at a banquet celebrating the first anniversary of Israeli statehood to be held by the Johannesburg Zionist Federation on May 3, it was revealed today in a letter from the office of Premier Daniel F. Malan to the Federation, accepting an invitation to the government to attend the celebration.
This will be the first time since the Nationalists took office in this country that a government official of Ministerial rank will officially participate in a Jewish communal celebration. Former Premier Jan C, Smuts will be the guest of honor at an Israel anniversary dinner at Capetown. Other celebrations will be held in Bulawayo and Salisbury, while special religious services will be held in synagogues throughout the country.
