Sharp criticisms were voiced here today against two pro-Government dailies that have listed the “racial origin” of candidates in the forthcoming elections to the Provincial Council. In their listings, these newspapers have added the identifications “Jewish,” “Greek-English,” “English” and “Afrikaans” after the names of the candidates.
Dirk Richard, editor of the Nationalist weekly, Dagbreek, which is also pro-Government, declared today that this procedure “could only give grounds of indulgence in racialism.” A spokesman for the United Party attacked the practice as “an attempt at isolating Jewish candidates.” Other opposition members in Parliament also criticized the new practice.
