Rabbi M. C. Weiller, leader of South African Reform Jewry, told a press conference here today that the racial policy in South Africa advocated by Premier Malan has not touched the 106,000. Jews of the country. On the contrary, he said, the Jewish community of South Africa has been received with certain sympathy on the part of South African nationalists, because of the struggle which Zionists conducted against Britain in connection with the Palestine issue and the creation of Israel.
Dr. Weiller emphasized that Jews in South Africa occupy leading positions in the political, civil and economic life of the country. He noted that the mayors of Johannesburg and Cape Town are both Jews and that the acting Chief Justice of the country is a member of the Jewish community. At the same time, he pointed out that while the Jewish community as a body had decided not to intervene in the “grave and complex” racial problem of South Africa, many individual Jews were working for the betterment of conditions among the native population.
