A prediction that the McCarran-Walter Immigration Act, opposed by Jewish and non-Jewish liberal groups, will be revised was made by U.S. Solicitor General Simon E. Sobeloff addressing the Ninth Annual Conference on Citizenship here, in which the American Jewish Committee, National Jewish Welfare Board and B’nai B’rith participated.
“Departures in our immigration laws from the traditional role of America as a haven for the oppressed will before too long be corrected, as the President has urged,” Mr. Sobeloff said. While he recognized the “good motivations” of “those who enacted the present immigration laws,” he pointed out “that these provisions are working unnecessary hardships without compensating advantage to the nation.” He said they “go far beyond the needs of security or economic protection.”
