Some 200 people, including representatives of 30 American communities, gathered Sunday at the International Synagogue at Kennedy Airport, to receive a torch lit by Israeli President Ephraim Katzir and flown to the U.S. to launch celebrations of Israel’s 30th anniversary. Rabbi Israel Miller, interim president of the American Zionist Federation, which coordinated the ceremony, said the torch “is a bridge between the people of Israel and American Jewry.” Sarah Shane, president of American Mizrachi Women, chaired the event. Among the guests at the ceremony was Faye Schenk, a member of the World Zionist Organization Executive, who brought a special message from Katzir.
