Some 30,000 protesters marched in Paris to condemn the extreme-right National Front. Leftist parties organized the march in Paris and in other cities after President Jacques Chirac promised last week that he would seek to diminish the political influence of the Front, whose recent electoral strength, he said, could “damage France.” The Paris protesters shouted chants comparing the Front to the Nazis and other fascist groups.
