Some 400 persons gathered at the Spanish-Portuguese synagogue here to commemorate the arrival in 1945 of the first group of Canada’s postwar Jewish immigrants. The synagogue’s new president, Max Wolofsky, called for better integration of newcomers and expressed concern over the plight of Syrian and Soviet Jews. Dr. Joseph Kage, national director of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services of Canada (JIAS), said that since 1945 the country has taken in 95,000 Jews, with one-third of Canada’s Jews today being postwar immigrants.
