Some American Jewish groups criticized the Clinton adminstration for waiving sanctions against European companies that are doing business with Iran. A 1996 law, intended to deter Tehran’s efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction and promote terrorism, called for punitive trade measures against companies investing in Iran’s oil sector. In return for the U.S. waiver, E.U. countries pledged to step up cooperation against terrorism and tighten controls to prevent Iran from acquiring weapons of mass destruction.
