Some members of Britain’s Jewish community are criticizing British Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks’ decision to accept an invitation from Queen Elizabeth to attend a Friday evening reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the 50th birthday of Prince Charles. Sacks, who made the 30-minute journey to the palace from the Marble Arch synagogue in London’s West End on foot, defended his decision on the grounds that it was a mitzvah, a commandment, to express “the loyalty of the Jewish community to the nation and the head of state.”
