The South African colony in Israel, which is concentrated in the township of Ascalon, is planning municipal and industrial expansion of the area and its organization into five separate towns, Dr. Herbert Sonnabend, chairman of the Ascalon Municipal Council, reported today.
The first of the five towns is already inhabited by several thousand persons concentrated in 450 housing units. The existing town of Migdal Gad will be the second of the five. A third, to be named “Barnea” will house Israel’s growing film industry. The remaining two municipal centers will be located, respectively, to the north and the south of Ascalon, Dr. Sonnabend declared that Ascalon will be converted into a beach resort town with modern facilities, while South African Jews will attempt a general industrialization of the area.
Rabbi M.C. Weiler, Reform Jewish leader of South African Jewry, who is currently visiting Israel and who has seen the Ascalon development, today said: “This achievement should be credited to South African Jewry.” Rabbi Weiler is scheduled to return to South Africa today.
