Pointing out that in 1945 the South African Jewish community has pledged $1,600,000 to the Joint Distribution Committee’s relief and rehabilitation programs in Europe, Max J. Spitz, an outstanding Jewish leader in the Union of South Africa, told a press conference today that “South African Jewry is fully aware of the magnificent job J.D.C. is doing in helping our suffering brethren.”
The arrangement joining the South African Jewish War Appeal and the Joint Distribution Committee as full partners in their humanitarian work calls for the JDC to continue “the actual distribution of relief supplies as well as the setting up of long-range rehabilitation and reconstruction programs,” Mr. Spitz said. South African Jewry, he added, is especially anxious to bring whatever relief is required to the surviving Jews in Eastern Europe whose tragic plight is probably the worst of all destitute Jewish communities in Europe.
