South African Jewry began its celebration of Israel’s tenth anniversary of independence last night with a reception at the Israel Legation at Pretoria to which leading members of Rand Jewry came to extend their felicitations.
Israel Minister Isaac Bavly read to the assembled guests a message from Israel Premier David Ben Gurion expressing Israel’s thanks for the contributions of South African Jewry over the last decade. Several other functions will be held this week, including a Legation reception for the diplomatic corps and a Zionist Federation Independence Day banquet in Johannesburg. On Sunday thousands of men, women and children will crowd into Johannesburg’s Sembley Stadium for a pageant to greet the tenth birthday of the Jewish State
