The second national conference of the South African Union for Progressive Judaism was held at Springs, near here, with delegates and visitors from all parts of the Union attending. Observers from the South African Board of Deputies, the Zionist Federation and the Union of Jewish Women were also present.
Rabbi M.C. Weiler, president of the Reform organization, reported that the Capetown congregation has risen to 1,060 members one year after the arrival of its new spiritual leader, Rabbi David Sherman, while the Johannesburg membership is 2,000. It was also announced that Rabbi R. Brasch of Britain had agreed to accept the leadership of the Springs congregation.
Dr. Julian Morgenstern, president emeritus of the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati, was named an honorary life member of the organization for his services to the cause of Reform Judaism in South Africa.
