Jewish leaders from the entire South and Southwest will attend a three-day leadership institute to be held here by the United Jewish Appeal, beginning January 18, it was announced today by Paul Kapelow, of this city, who has been named chairman of the extraordinary conference. Prominent communal leaders, he said, are to come to the institute from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
Mr. Kapelow, one of the most active among Jewish communal leaders in the South, was appointed as conference chairman by Joseph Meyerhoff, of Baltimore, general chairman of the UJA. A former president and campaign chairman of the New Orleans Jewish Welfare Fund, Mr. Kapelow is a member of the UJA’s national campaign cabinet.
Speakers scheduled to attend the conference, Mr. Kapelow said, include Mr. Meyerhoff; Edward M.M. Warburg, honorary chairman of the UJA, and chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee; Ambassador Michael S. Comay, Israel’s permanent representative to the United Nations; Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, executive vice -chairman of the UJA; Mrs. I. D. Fink, of Minneapolis, chairman of the UJA’s national women’s division; and Henry Kirsch, director of JDC operations in Italy.
