A call for more vigorous law enforcement to halt bombings and threats in the South was issued here by directors of a group known as the “Southern Regional Council.”
Directors attending a regional meeting in Atlanta said about 50 bombings of religious, racial and public facilities have taken place in less than three years. “It is shocking that out of this number, court conviction has been secured in only one case,” a council statement said. The case was in North Carolina where three were convicted of plotting to bomb a school.
At the same time, the Council commended moves by Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama toward tighter control of explosives. The Council is composed of both whites and Negroes. Directors attended from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
