The Soviet Government newspaper Izvestia today accused Israeli diplomats of smuggling “Zionist propaganda booklets” into the Soviet Union, according to reports received here. The Israelis were charged with “smuggling” printed matter and trying to distribute it at an agricultural exhibition in Moscow and in Leningrad, Kiev and Odessa.
“The competent Soviet organizations have taken all necessary measures to stop this illegal activity in which some Israeli tourists were also involved,” Izvestia reported. The newspaper indicated that violators of Soviet customs regulations would be dealt with harshly. It said that “our doors are open to all people who come to us with honest intentions, but gentlemen who are trying to abuse our hospitality and violate Soviet law should not be misled and count on immunity.”
