A series of lectures on medieval and modern Hebrew literature for the Jewish section of the Moscow Pedagogic and Literary Institute was announced here tonight. The lectures will be given under the auspices of A.S. Buoncv, Commissar of Education.
Coming at a time when the All-Union Congress of Soviets was meeting to adopt the new liberal constitution, speculation was aroused as to whether the announcement foreshadowed abandonment of the ban on Hebrew and Zionism.
The lectures, to be delivered by Alexander Chasin, will begin shortly, the announcement said, and will cover Talmudic literature, Hebrew literature of the Middle Ages and modern works, including even those of Chaim Nachman Bialik, the late Hebrew poet laureate and foremost exponent of Zionism in poetry.
It was recalled that the World Jewish Congress which met in Geneva last September decided to negotiate with the Soviet Government for abandonment of the restrictions on the teaching of Hebrew and propagation of Zionism.
